To exam the blind lid dark side of table tennis, we visited team USA Olympic player and college national double’s champion, Erica Wu. In competition, not only your table tennis ball fast, they’re difficult to predict. During her serve, Erica’s paddle spins on the ball at the rate over 3 thousand RPM, that’s rotation twice as fast as Major League curve ball. In although it, table tennis ball travels a much shorter distance than a baseball, top spin can cause the break as much as two feet. But since the surface of the ball is smooth and seamless, it is virtually impossible to read the spin with your eyes. This is why table tennis players like Erica relay on their ears for information. Picking up the several audible differences between the loud flat contact, which pods minimal spin, and softer brushing sound indicated lots of spin.
In identify rotation isn’t the only reason Erica relies on sound, study some shoots that auditory stimuli reaches the blink up to 3 hundredth seconds faster than visual stimuli. This help when dealing the ball that lead the paddle at speed over 70 miles an hour. Even the air drag reduces that speed high over than thirty percent, the shoot still can cover the nine foot table in less of eleven hundredth of the second. That’s on three times faster than a blinking an eye. With still little time to react, players naturally move back away from the table. For each the short foot for the ball to travel, Erica gains roughly thirteen percent more time to react, which is like OB table tennis players like Garaka sometimes plays far twenty feet behind the end of table. But even in that distance, they only have about half of a second to react. That’s comparable to return the one hundred fifty miles an hour tennisor. While returning the ball to the area, nearly fifty times smaller than the size of tennis court.

    Virginia Chang
